Peter,
You have a good point. Often Cities do not realize the skatepark is in need of repair. One of the main goals of our blog is to educate, we hope that Skaters will become more vocal and will let City officials know when maintenance and repairs are needed. We also wish to provide insight for municipalities so that they are able to make the best decision possible in regards to which type of facility is best for their community. A Skatepark in need of repair can be a safety concern and ultimately a liability; this is why we recommend quarterly reviews. Ultimately, the hope is an informed municipality would not only budget for the design and construction of a Skatepark but would also include maintenance and or repair costs for life of the park.

I'm curious how many warranties are actually claimed. My experience is that when Parks Departments are contacted about the shoddy state of their skateparks, they claim ignorance...or suggest that they simply perform routine maintenance such as emptying trash and sweeping up, (maybe covering graffiti). They don't KNOW that the skatepark is falling apart.

When pressed for more information about a possible warranty claim, they often can't be bothered to look into, don't know where the paperwork is, or feel that the reward-to-effort is not balanced in their favor. After all, nobody's really complaining. (In that vein, skaters themselves often don't understand when a skatepark is falling apart and simply consider its deteriorated state as a irrevocable fact of life...and not something they have the power to improve.) Skaters' tacit acceptance combined with an over-worked and under-educated Parks Department suggests that skatepark warranties could be over-promising without any risk.

In the interest of disclosure, some companies who have notorious reputations for producing skateparks that quickly deteriorate are often quite responsive about fixing a problem when there is public agitation...and for that we thank them. It's just a shame that for every skatepark that activists shine a spotlight on there are probably a dozen more that go unnoticed.

That's a great addition to the list. Too bad his knees and injuries didn't keep him in the game longer. Thanks for the comment.

Rodney Mullen always pushing progression is pretty huge. He took freestyle skateboarding to the streets and redefined it totally. Don't forget about the first dark slide either!
